Key Philanthropic Initiatives
African Innovation Foundation (AIF)
Founded in 2009, the African Innovation Foundation serves as a catalyst for innovation across the continent. Through initiatives like the Innovation Prize for Africa (IPA), launched in 2011 in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), AIF identifies and rewards market-oriented solutions that advance development. The prize has mobilized over 9,400 changemakers from all 55 African countries and supported past winners and nominees with approximately $1 million to advance their ideas. IPA winners have secured over $135 million in investments, with their companies collectively valued at more than $200 million.
African Law Library (ALL)
The African Law Library was established to provide accessible legal resources across Africa. Inspired by Bastos' personal experience navigating traditional and formal legal systems in Angola, this pioneering initiative brings together legal texts, customary laws, and court rulings to support better legal understanding and access across the continent, empowering citizens and strengthening legal frameworks.
Fábrica de Sabão
In 2015, Bastos transformed a derelict soap factory into a hybrid incubator, accelerator, makerspace, and co-working space in Angola. This innovative hub serves as a cultural connector, teaching local youth to operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines and 3D printers to manufacture items from recycled materials, while fostering entrepreneurship and technical skills development.
